Hi I’m Krystal,
I teach Nutrition, Art and Wellness workshops in both the corporate world and in the community. I also offer one on one plans for individuals who are desiring to bring doable and realistic health changes into their daily lifestyle and who also want a more simplistic life full of meaningful self-care.
This was not always my story...in my early 30s, I woke up one day and things were different, the kind of different that began with a phone call.
It went like this:
“The biopsy we took shows that yes, it is cancer.”
Time stopped; my life changed.
I was 37 years old and had just given birth to my second child when I heard the words “you have cancer”. Who imagines their maternity leave will be spent having major abdominal surgery, five weeks of recovery and bed rest? What about needing their mom to move in because they aren't able to hold their newborn baby or look after their toddler by themselves? I sure as heck didn't!
Then 8 long months of chemotherapy happened, some really shitty side effects and several angry “what if ? moments”. It all left me as a sobbing mess thinking what will happen if I couldn't beat this.
I was a busy mom juggling a billion things at once and my diagnosis was so unexpected that everything came crashing down.
Before my diagnosis I had already decided that I was tired of feeling like crap. I worked as a mental health outreach worker in Montreal for several years and had recently lived through major postpartum depression after my first child was born. Let me tell you, it was a humbling experience having to reach out for my own mental health support.
After going through this and then moving back to Edmonton from Montreal, I had promised myself I was going to finally respect my own boundaries and put myself first. I had found a another job as a mental health worker and did my best to set limits, but sadly the “job” kept pushing back.
The result; fatigue and burnout.
Having this realization was an eye opener for me. I realized that I wasn't nourishing myself at a deeper level, but knew that I wanted to.
I realized I needed put myself first.
Does this sound familiar? Sitting there feeling burnt out and wanting to be that “super star mom or employee”, but you are too busy meeting everyone else's needs first over your own?
It wasn't until after the experience of cancer and suffering burnout a few times that I realized I did not want to go through this again. Putting into practice realistic self-care habits and routines and simplifying has been key in bouncing back when I slip because…
S.H.I.T. ...Sometimes Health is Tough, no?
• I chose to no longer be a victim in my body
• I chose to become a cancer thriver and not a cancer survivor
• I started trusting my body’s ability to heal
• I learned how to say ‘no’
• I stopped obsessing over the “what ifs”
• I ditched the complicated protocols and plans and focused on foods that felt right
• I simplified - everything
